Over 130 years old, these relics from a long past era are being operated especially for visitors to the Heritage Festival. Starting from Castlemaine Station the heritage train takes you to Maldon where you can explore Australia's First Notable Town before returning to Castlemaine

Join us for a memorable ride on Victoria’s oldest railway carriages. Over 130 years old, these relics from a long past era and are rarely used these days.

Experience rail travel of the 1880’s as you sit back and hear the clickety-clack as your train makes its way slowly through the box and ironbark forests to Maldon. Classified by the National Trust as Australia’s first notable town, to be preserved in its entirety, it is not a museum but a living town, with past and present co-existing happily.

The train will leave Castlemaine promptly at 11:30am and will arrive at Maldon at 12:20. You’ll have three hours to stroll in to town and enjoy the heritage street-scape, the picturesque shops and the many delightful cafes, pubs and tea-rooms.

Parking is available at Castlemaine Railway Station. Fast and frequent V/line services connect Castlemaine with Bendigo and Melbourne. Please note, The carriages that make up the Victorian Colonial Express are 1880s-vintage and are not accessible for anyone in a wheelchair, or with a pram that doesn't fold.
