The popular Looking at Architecture program returns this spring with a visit to private homes of unique heritage, historical and architectural significance in the Central West city and district of Bathurst in Wiradjuri Country.
When Governor Lachlan Macquarie proclaimed the site for Australia’s first settlement west of the mountains in 1815, he could hardly have envisaged the exciting modern university city of Bathurst.
Gateway to the golden west, Bathurst, on the banks of the Macquarie River, is surrounded by highly productive, agricultural countryside and historic country homesteads. In the city, a diverse range of architectural styles line the streets, surrounded by well-kept gardens.
A number of town and country properties will be visited*, including, but not limited to:
- “Blackdown”, C1827, now fully restored. Set on a rise above the city, surrounded by magnificent trees, sweeping lawns and lush gardens
- “Alloway Bank”, C1872, retains many of its original features and is surrounded by a large garden, with cattle grazing in the nearby paddocks
- “Macquarie”. One of the oldest farms in NSW built on land granted to William Lawson, 1814, including a restored convict barracks. Built by convict labour using bricks manufactured on site. Painstakingly restored by the current owners who have committed significant resources to the project
- Miss Traill’s House, a delightful C1845 bungalow, turned house museum, that offers a unique insight into the changing history of Bathurst throughout the 20th century

Please note: This is a self-drive event. Details of the properties to visit will be provided to ticketholders before the event. Uneven terrain may be experienced, it’s recommended participants consider this before booking.
Ticketholders are also invited to add the following experiences* to their weekend program:
- Friday 27 September, 4:30pm – 6pm: Drinks Party at Miss Traill’s House. Drinks and light refreshments – SOLD OUT
- Saturday 28 September, 12 noon – 1:30pm: Light lunch.
- Saturday 28 September, 6pm: Dinner at Abercrombie House. 3 course dinner with wine – SOLD OUT
*Friday drinks party and Saturday dinner experiences are open to weekend ticketholders only.
