The Cessnock School of Arts building is one of the city's most prominent and this year is celebrating its centenary. It has been home to a hairdresser, operated as a cemetery office and even housed a Turkish bath. This exhibition uncovers the School of Arts many fascinating stories.

Immerse yourself in a historical journey through Newcastle’s old police station, led by The Lock-Up Director, Warwick Heywood. Discover the stories of intriguing characters and events which transpired during the station’s operation, including the Coal Strike of 1909 and the 1979 Star Hotel Riot.

The building was originally two lock-up cells on the site in 1840. In 1899, the Municipal Council was given the buildings after a new gaol was built. In 1963, the Singleton Historical Society was given the use of the building.

As part of the Australian Heritage Festival and to celebrate the library building's 20th anniversary, the Singleton Public Library will host Peter Fitzsimmons at the Civic Centre to speak about his new book, The Last Charge of the Australian Light Horse.
