In 1878 Robert Bain, owner of the Border Hotel, gave land on a 500-year lease for a Mechanics Institute and Library. The connection between the library and the pub continues. The Berwick Mechanics Institute & Free Library still operates a free lending library on this land, close to the Berwick Inn.

Making sheep history, the Valais Blacknose are finally here in Australia and are the feature sheep breed at the Fleece, Fibre & Fancywork celebration at Gulf Station.
