In 1878 Robert Bain, owner of the Border Hotel, gave land on a 500-year lease for a Mechanics Institute and Library. The connection between the library and the pub continues. The Berwick Mechanics Institute & Free Library still operates a free lending library on this land, close to the Berwick Inn.
